Grace Summers, who came up with this name to pay respect to blessing of summers, practices her art in the most simplistic form: the recording process takes place live from her bedroom using Garage Band one takes. In opposition to the general belief, American folk music is not only a tradition white artform. We tend to forget about the diversity of North American folk music which originates from regionalism rather that just being based on roots. Several genres ranging from traditional music ranging from blues, bluegrass, country music, gospel and cajun all have their definition partly attached to this term.
If you constantly lie in wait to find the next musical act that should retain your attention, Andrew Johnston should definitely be next on your list under the singer-songwriter category. Originally from Montreal, Johnston proved his skills through several band experiences before taking upon the scene as a solo artist. The recent studio release "The Wake Of The Wonder Years" unveils winsome folk-inflicted indie-rock tunes that will appeal to any guitar-strumming lover. It is quite interesting to note how the artist plays with vocals effects and playful arrangements, rendering a jaunty, catchy sound. Leaving you on these interesting details, we to prompt you to keep an eye on this coming figure, just like we will.
Andrew Johnston will be playing Wednesday 22nd @ Quai Des Brumes (4481 St-Denis).

I always seem to be more drawn to artists who have some sort of musical training beforehand, but sometimes you just got 'it'. Shortcircles definitely falls under this category, producing what he tags on his Twitter as 'bliss-hop'. Drawing influences from Four Tet, Floating Points, Teebs, and DJ Shadow, this guy is on some ethereal fleecy worshipping tip. Releasing his debut with Plug Research, the label is also home for other notable producers like Quadron, Tensei, Exile, and Sonnymoon (to name a few). Check out some of his other work as Hoodcat with two other collaborators.

After releasing something like over 6 full-length albums, 7 ep's, with collaborators amongst the names of Exile, Madlib, and Flying Lotus, Blu is on the most talented and hard working underground rappers of our time.
From emcee to proficient rapper to producer extraordinaire, Blu is the gift that keeps on giving with 3 records released in 2011 alone - Jesus, NoYork!, and Open.

Visions - Grimes
Montreal-based artist and beatmaker Grimes has been on a striking rise to prominence after receiving widespread praise for breakthrough albums Geidi Primes and Halfaxa, both released in 2010. Claire Boucher’s exploits resides in her compelling ability of have made her singular music and estranged sonic aesthetics alluring for both refined beat-lovers and mainstream taste. The prodigious artist has recently signed to british label 4AD, who are issuing internationally her long-awaited album Visions hitting shelves today.
Grimes had already aroused our interest by realeasing two early cuts simultaneously from her forthcoming record. The vivid retro-synth ‘‘Oblivion’’ and latent high-chimey, pop-evasive "Genesis" displayed the alternate tangent the artist might have been taking, moving toward a more accessible sound. Thus, Visions is no departure from the idiosyncratic sound Grimes has accustomed us - an avant-gardist apop-inflicted electro concoction that avoids pouring into the conventional tendency. These thirteen tracks draw from various themes and influences, but each reveals to be surprisingly melodious, a characteristic that sets Grimes apart from fellow digital composers. Through the dominating ethereal ambiance and within the overuse of synths, loops and odd additions, the formula transcends.
In pure Grimes fashion, she genuily plays with dissonance and makes accurate use of her signature (and exceptionally) high and airy vocals. Despite the deliberate lack of structure of the pieces, Visions remains remarkably cohesive, every beat and sonority is judiciously integrated, enhancing a very organic sound. Finally, Grimes’ latest work comes with an important asset that will pay for electronic music newbies like me: the listening process of the album is totaly effortless. Most uncommonly in the genre, Grimes’ music is strictly evocative : her wholehearted compositions might plunge you into deep emotions ranging from ecstasy, grief and wonder. How much soul can you pour into digitally crafted songs ? Only Claire Bouchers would know. Definitely a very neat uptake.

Joker is a dubstep artist from London, U.K. He started off his career as a DJ, but now decided to produce his own music, and decided that dubstep, the grimes, his own style of music, was the way to go. He has his own insane range of material, and his production style started at the age of 15. Young isn't it? This guy is far from being a joke, however, as his music brings out its own colors and character.
DJ Pinch, the one who released Joker's EP Earwax in 2007 in the U.K, described Joker's music as "bold and forthcoming, bass heavy, intracately melodic, and well-structured. He was inspired by video games in order to create some of his songs of his Earwax EP: Sonic the Hedgehog from Sega for his song Grimey Princess, and his song Retro Racer is another video game inspired song.
The point of all of this is, this artist is filled with lots of talent. He has a lot to offer with his different style of grimes, bass heavy music, and pounding synths and has been gaining more and more rep throughout the years. Since 2007, he's had many EPs such as Top of the Game, Hyperdub 5.2, Tectonic Plates (with Flying Lotus) and finally, most recently, Gully Goon Estate. His most craziest singles have hit the charts for a while, such as Tron in 2010 and The Vision in 2011 (which was his debut album). Get a good look at this artist: pure talent, different than any other dubstep artists, and has nowhere to go but up.

We can now talk about Québécois rap without cowering into a corner! Introducing Alaclair Ensemble, 'rap postrigon bas-canadienne' from Québec City and Montréal. No need to understand what they're talking about to appreciate this level of brilliance (although if you did, you could get a few kicks and giggles out of it). Apparently known to be exceptionally entertaining performers, they have been known to claim any spot indoors or out, crowded or not and put out some of the illest performances with nothing but a kickdrum, MCs, and a good deal of wit. Here is their latest mixtape for free, and don't forget to cop their other ones available on their website!
